Great read and history of the Marines in the Pacific in WW II. Individual stories are woven into the fabric of the actual battles. Japanese brutality is worse then modern day ISIS. This historically accurate book should be read by todays younger set. The young men and what they endured and went through is a testament to our society and a good reason to avoid war whenever possible.I felt a duty to finish this long book because it memorialized many individuals by name and described their sacrifices and selfless bravery. Since it was written in 1961 many the individuals were eyewitnesses and the book had an immediacy to it. This is what many our fathers and grandfathers went through but don't talk much about. The author in some cases was right there and experienced what he was writing about.
