I would strongly recommend using these if you need to make a big hole in your studs, especially if it is a load bearing wall. We had to run a 2" ABS pipe and some 3/4" PEX-a through some load bearing 2x4s, and these stud shoes were the perfect solution. They restore the stud's tensile and compressive strength for the material you removed. Sure, the code allows a certain sized hole, but I used them even over those smaller holes as well. It's cheap insurance and ensures you aren't affecting your structure. I don't see contractors using these much, as they take a little extra time and cost money... but for me, I want them. They are easy to install really, they can be installed even after the pipe is ran through the hole. It has a hinge that you fold down out of the way and fold back up after in position (so you can get around the pipe already through the stud). I didn't need to use this, but it's a great feature. These are the HEAVY DUTY version, there is also a STANDARDY DUTY one that does NOT restore COMRPESSIVE STRENGTH, only tensile. I would recommend the HD one over the standard cheaper one.It comes with the exact screws specified by Simpson. This is code compliant almost always, but check with your inspector if you want to be double sure.
