I’ve just received and assembled this desk (which is called a sideboard in the product instructions, etc.)First, it is packed the cheap styrofoam that picks up static and clings to everything. I’ll be vacuuming my office daily for the next week.Construction is poor. There are screws in the top, for example, at a variety on jaunty angles. Some of the holes in the legs that fasteners go through were not cleanly drilled. Later, during assembly, I found that the holes often only vaguely aligned. One of the captive nuts in one leg had been set too deep — during assembly I had to leave off the spring washer in order for the bolt to reach it.In the assembly manual, there are errors. For example, it shows that the spring washer should be placed onto the bolt before the flat washer, but it swaps the part numbers so that if one followed those, one would put on the flat washer first (which would be bad). The position of the legs varies between the exploded parts diagram (which is correct) and the assembly diagram with the desk inverted. It doesn’t clearly say that the bolt coming in from the side pretty much has to go in first to get alignment right.Generally, question every instruction and test fit everything. The assembly instructions are a vague guide, more like a spirit animal in a quest than a Sherpa who will drag a flabby suburbanite up and down Everest.Additionally, there’s stuff like the part of the legs that attach them to the desk is a block of soft pine that’s easily crushed when tightening fasteners. The coverage of the paint varies from place to place in the desk. In contrast to most inexpensive pieces that emulate nicer furniture, sitting across the room on my sofa, I can see some of the bolts that attach the legs.Basically, if I had the time and energy, I would return this, but I need a desk now. Nonetheless, I consider this roughly equivalent to the sort of furniture that I got from someone moving out — I’ll use it for a bit and then trash it when I move next.A friend used to say things like: “This is a cheap desk and also it’s inexpensive.” That summarizes this piece well.
