Have used a very old Floodstop unit for my fridge water and ice for many years - my old fridge had the plastic water line mounted too close to a hot part of the fridge, and twice my downstairs neighbor had gotten water through his ceiling - though I had no visible water on the floor where I could see. The floodstop has sensors you place where you want, and you can easily add more sensors. When these sensors sense water, they shut off the flow of water to the appliance. What is really great is that the floodstop unit tests the valve monthly, opening and closing it, so the valve will work when it needs too, it won't be "frozen" - you can easily turn the water on or off at the floodstop control, and you can hook up autodialers or other items to be notified if the floodstop has been activated. My current floodstop I bought for the dishwasher - the new ones now take AA batteries as a back up, while still plugged in to an outlet, if you wish - I have both of mine plugged into a wall socket, so the batteries are only for backup. You can also just run the floodstops on batteries alone and not plug them in, but of course the batteries won't last as long as they will if used for back-up only. I use rechargeable batteries on both my old floodstop, which took c-cells, and my new one, that takes AA. Much cheaper to buy floodstop units than to have the large amount of damage caused with a water leak.
