Description

Spiritual warfare is a divisive subject for today&;s church. Some Christians focus solely on the immediate world around them, living as if there&;s no spiritual opposition to God&;s people and His kingdom. Others take an aggressive stance, where confronting the enemy becomes a constant pursuit in their lives. John MacArthur believes the truth is found between these extremes. Standing Strong offers a balanced, biblically sound approach to spiritual warfare in the life of a believer. A trusted and renowned pastor and author, MacArthur examines key scriptures to debunk modern fallacies, define true spiritual warfare, and share what that looks like for believers today. Throughout, you&;ll be encouraged and equipped to stand strong in the face of every spiritual challenge. Standing Strong includes a guide for both personal and group study, which features discovery questions, suggestions for prayer, and activities, all designed to connect life-changing truths with everyday living.

John MacArthur as usual has written a great book that offers a true biblical look at the issue. He start with looking at what the biblical picture is of the issue at hand, rather than his own experience of demonic encounters. He proceeds to refute many of the growing and increasingly common held beliefs about spiritual warfare in Christianity in this age. We seem to think of spiritual warfare as a pastor or priest screaming at a demon to come out, or chasing away the devil in the name of Christ.I myself was brought up and still attend a reformed church, but I have not been against visiting other denominations, during which I have paid visit to some Pentecostal churches where the devil is rebuke before the service starts. On one occasion when I was about 9 years old we attended a service at one of my uncles churches, which were pentecostal and quite involved in the "spiritual warfare" movement. There I got a shock of my life, about half-way through the service some member where called up confessing they've done some sin and subsequently the pastor went on to yell for this demon in this woman to leave, me and my little brother were quite frightened and had to leave the church and left us wondering for years about the possibility of believers being possessed. This is the issue MacArthur gets to first by laying out how it is not possible for a believer to be possessed as the Holy spirit and satan cannot dwell together, he then goes on the refute the notion on a specific chant being what is required in spiritual warfare. He shows that from a biblical perspective we are not to combat satan ourselves, but we are to resist satan through prayer and by living a life of faith. He makes this case then from a good global view of the Bible on this issue, which for the details you would have to read the book. I would recommend this book to any christian who has been struggling with sin in their life or has been lead to a interest in the topic of spiritual warfare, as this is a easy to read worthwhile look at the matter.
